The Virgin Birth: Merry Christmas!
19 Then Joseph her husband, being a just man, and not willing to make her a publick example, was minded to put her away privily. 20 But while he thought on these things, behold, the angel of the Lord appeared unto him in a dream, saying, Joseph, thou son of David, fear not to take unto thee Mary thy wife: for that which is conceived in her is of the Holy Ghost. 21 And she shall bring forth a son, and thou shalt call his name JESUS: for he shall save his people from their sins. 22 Now all this was done, that it might be fulfilled which was spoken of the Lord by the prophet, saying, 23 Behold, a virgin shall be with child, and shall bring forth a son, and they shall call his name Emmanuel, which being interpreted is, God with us. 24 Then Joseph being raised from sleep did as the angel of the Lord had bidden him, and took unto him his wife: 25 And knew her not till she had brought forth her firstborn son: and he called his name JESUS (Matthew 1:19 -25). The Bible teaches that there, in fact, was a virgin birth that occurred 2000 years ago. The Bible records this event in history. Joseph, the husband of Mary, was commanded by the angel of the Lord not to fear taking Mary as his wife. He was fearful to take her because he thought she had been sleeping around during their betrothal period; thus, he was going to put her away privately and not bring her to public disgrace. However, the angel of the Lord spoke to him in a dream, and he told him to take her as his wife because she was with child by the miraculous power of the Holy Spirit. Her conception was a fulfillment of the sign given to the house of David in the ancient prophecies of Isaiah, for Joseph was of the lineage of king David and Mary was as well (Isaiah 7:11-14; Psalm 132:11). Therefore, Jesus had the right to sit on David’s throne.
The Scripture says that all this was done to fulfill the Word of God spoken in Isaiah 7:14, and Matthew proceeded to quote the verse so there would be no mistaking the meaning of his words. Then, he interpreted the word “Immanuel” just in case people missed exactly what he was conveying. He said, “Behold, a virgin shall be with child, and shall bring forth a son, and they shall call his name Emmanuel, which being interpreted is, God with us.” According to the interpretation of the Bible, the name Emmanuel means “God with us.” Wow! Jesus Christ was with us – He was God with us! He was God and is still God today!
Through Matthew, the Holy Spirit demolished any counterargument against the virgin birth. There is absolutely no way for any skeptic to question the validity of the virgin birth. It is impossible to dream up fables in order to displace confidence in the truth surrounding the virgin birth of Christ once the rightly divided facts are understood through the help of the power of the Holy Spirit. Bible prophecy is the fortress that buttresses faith in the miraculous conception of Christ. The fulfillment of these prophecies is icing on the cake.
Mary’s response was candid: “How shall this be, seeing I know not a man?” She never had intercourse with a man before; knowing the facts of life, she had a valid point. Yet, God had already taken this into consideration thousands of years earlier when He stated, “Behold a virgin shall conceive…” and a virgin did. The apostle Matthew proclaims that the Holy Spirit miraculously came upon Mary. The power of the Holy Spirit overshadowed her. He did not physically embrace her in an inappropriate, sexual way. He did not have some kind of ecstatic relationship with her. There was no sensual pleasure involved. It was the power of “the Highest” that overshadowed her. His power overshadowed her which means His power enveloped her or surrounded her. The Holy Spirit came upon or empowered this blessed virgin and the result was a true virgin conception. The power of God’s Spirit miraculously, supernaturally caused her to conceive. There is nothing shady going on here. The Holy Spirit performed a miracle. The Son of God became flesh and blood indwelling the virgin’s womb. Jesus Christ literally, supernaturally stepped into her womb when the Spirit of God overshadowed her. “The Holy Ghost shall come upon thee, and the power of the Highest shall overshadow thee: therefore also that holy thing which shall be born of thee shall be called the Son of God.” This incredible phenomenon was the sign to the “house of David” that God would keep the promises He made to David in the Davidic Covenant (Isaiah 7:11-14; 2 Samuel 7). Jesus Christ, the Son of David, is the rightful heir to the throne of David. He is the One Jehovah foretold would crush Satan’s head (Genesis 3:15) and sit on the throne of David forever (2 Samuel 7). The Bible is impeccably clear in regard to the virgin birth of our Messiah. The virgin birth was and is an absolute necessity to our Christian faith and heritage.
Why, then, do so many who claim to be Christians disbelieve in the virgin birth? The virgin birth of Jesus Christ is absolutely true and verified in history. It is historically and accurately reported in the Bible. Prophecies were made concerning it thousands of years before it even occurred. It is impossible not to believe the Word of God. If a skeptic challenges your faith in the virgin birth of Jesus Christ, please allow the Word of God and the Holy Spirit to be your confidence. Don’t allow a foolish professor, coworker, boss, or family member to shake your confidence in the proven Word of God by questioning its validity. They need serious help if they do not trust in the truth of the Bible. No one exhibits more ignorance than the one who is attacking the veracity of the Word of God. The Bible says, “The fear of the LORD, is the beginning of knowledge: but fools despise wisdom and instruction” (Proverbs 1:7). Those who do not believe in the Word of God, the Bible, do not have any wisdom or knowledge to offer you. God says that they are in fact, fools. He says, “Whoso loveth instruction loveth knowledge: but he that hateth reproof is stupid” (Proverbs 12:1). If a person does not love the instruction of God’s Word, then they are without a doubt, stupid. God says, “Go from the presence of a foolish man, when thou preceivest not in him the lips of knowledge” (Proverbs 14:7). And, “Wisdom is too high for a fool: he openeth not his mouth at the gate” (Proverbs 24:7) Again, “He that trusteth in his own heart is a fool: but whoso walketh wisely, he shall be delivered” (Proverbs 28:26). Another Proverb emphatically states, “He that refuseth instruction despiseth his own soul: but he that heareh reproof getteth understanding” (Proverbs 15:32).
Why listen to people who discredit God and His Word? Your salvation depends on Christ being born of a virgin, for if He was not born this way, His claim to the throne of David is false, and He, Himself, is a fraud. You cannot believe in a Messiah that did not have a virgin birth. You cannot say you are a Christian and not believe in the virgin birth. It is impossible and idiotic. It is unreasonable and unbiblical. It is delusional and intellectually dishonest! If you deny the virgin birth of Christ, then you deny the fact that He is Jehovah God. You have a generic Jesus; you have robbed Him of His power to save you from your sins (Mark 2:7). The virgin birth, Immanuel, and forgiveness of sins are all wrapped up and cloaked in the body of the God/Man Jesus Christ (Colossians 2:9). If Jesus Christ is not your God, Jehovah God, the only God of your religion, then your religion is a lie (1 John 2:22). You have an antichrist faith (1 John 4:3).
Saints, the antichrist church is rising! Don’t be a part of the deception. If your church does not believe in the virgin birth of our blessed Messiah – get out of there! If your church does not believe that Jesus Christ is Jehovah God – get out of there! This Christmas, celebrate the virgin birth of Jesus Christ, for the virgin birth declares who He is – Jehovah God with us– Immanuel. Believe in this Jesus and be forgiven of your sins (John 8:24, 58; Exodus 3:13-14).
